71 - monday

today is my last day in the ocean state. I went for a nice run this morning on blackstone boulevard (yes I sat in rush hour traffic just to go for a run), picked up the moving truck, had lunch and walked along the water in newport with my mom, and visited my grandmother in the hospital. my brother moved home from cambridge this evening to start his new job in east greenwich, and so we ended the night with all five of us plus my aunt martha, sitting outside at the picnic table, crushing three pizzas and a bucket of beers. it was a nice way to end my last day here.

this picture is from my run this morning. this statue, the spirit of youth, sits alongside the blackstone boulevard greenway; it is a memorial to constance witherby, a local girl who died as a young teenager in the early 1900's. the inscription on the statue's base is from a poem constance wrote and I often find myself turning it over in my head while I run. I think it's perfect for today.

the wind roars by; I feel it blow,
and know that I am free to go.

70 - sunday

my grandmother had a stroke this morning.

I didn't take any pictures today, because I threw myself into packing so that I would be distracted from worrying about her. as of 10:30 on sunday night, everything that I don't need for the next five days is packed and ready to be loaded on the truck.

I don't mean to be all high drama by writing a short post with bad news and no pictures, but the internet is not the place for me to discuss or speculate my grandmother's condition. I will say that I love her dearly and had a wonderful time with her at my party yesterday. and I hope that she's ok.

69 - saturday

today was my going away party. after days of cooking and cleaning and buying stuff and organizing stuff and cooking more stuff and planning and re-doing the plan, suddenly 3pm was upon us and it was party time.

t's parents joined us for a bit, too. I was so happy to see them. his mom makes me laugh. it was so wonderful to spend today surrounded by my family, my friends (new and old), and my neighbors to celebrate my graduation and to send me off on my big move to georgia.

uep ladies. so much love.

olivia got up at 6am to spend all day last sunday at my graduation AND rented a car to drive down to rhode island for my party today. friend of the year? I think yes.

alexis came in from new york!

68 - friday

warning: this post contains a lot of pictures of really freaking delicious food. I'm sorry, t. and I'm going to try to talk about me and my mom "smoking the meat" and "rubbing the pork" with a completely straight face. ready, go.

my little going away party is tomorrow, so my mom and I spent all day today preparing food.  she was in charge of smoking the 30lbs of pork shoulder. we rubbed the meat with spices last night, so it was good to go on the grill this morning. four hours on the grill + two hours in the oven + one hour in a crimped-shut paper bag = recipe for success. I helped her pull the meat apart when it was done cooking and cooling.

oh god, I'm sorry! I know. I'm horrible. but this is what I did today, so this is what you get pictures of. I could have taken a picture of the hour I spent waiting impatiently as my mechanic performed emergency open-heart surgery on my car, but honestly, I wasn't thinking that that was a moment for pictures.

instead you get this. while my mom tended to the meat on the grill, I made 87 red velvet cupcakes. first I thoroughly stained my hands beet red sifted, whipped, measured, poured, stirred, and beat the batter together (I love this recipe because there's a 2nd grade science experiment built into it! baking soda and vinegar explosion in a bowl!!! it never gets old), then I piped...

and baked...

and baked some more.

please don't count them. I made 87. I didn't say there were 87 left for tomorrow. (crap, I just realized I left a piece of evidence in the upper right-hand corner. consider this my I-already-ate-SIX-mini-cupcakes confession. happy?)

tomorrow is going to be a busy day, and I need my beauty sleep. so without further ado, allow me to practice my soon-to-be twang: night, y'all!

67 - thursday

what does it take to throw a party with 30+ guests?

a LOT of food. nearly 30lbs of pork shoulder, for starters. pulled pork, anyone?

tomorrow I have to finish food shopping (seriously... I need more stuff), bake cupcakes, and finish packing.

oh, and go to the dmv. because four days before my cross country move, I realized my license is nowhere to be found. it never leaves it's spot in my wallet, ever, except it did and now it's gone. so this girl gets to spend a piece of tomorrow at the good old rhode island dmv. waiting in line. for hours. my farewell to the state wouldn't be complete without it. I am an IDIOT.

(to end on a good note, can I get a heck yes! about being t-4 days from my big move? woop woop!)

66 - wednesday

buddy had a busy day yesterday.

I don't know if you recall my post from this time last year, but this dog has extreme hydrophobia. he fell in the pool as a puppy and almost drowned. even now, at 11 years old, he still avoids the water. every summer we try to lure him into the pool, and he ends up hiding under the furniture for a week.

yesterday he smelled really, really bad, so I gave him a bath. I bought puppy shampoo for him a week or so ago. because he has hair, not fur, his skin is super sensitive to whatever shampoo we use. I am convinced that human shampoo burns his scalp, so I figured I'd give puppy shampoo (with oatmeal!) a shot. success. he didn't shake, he didn't cry, he didn't try to get out of the tub. he just let me wash him (we won't go into how black and nasty the suds were when I rinsed him off). he even gave me a big kiss when we were done.

a few hours later, I was sitting by the pool with my mom and sister, and the dog was outside with us. he loves summer. he loves to lie on the brick patio, all four paws in the air, basking in the sunshine immodestly. my mom picked him up and put him on the top step of the pool, just enough so his paws were submerged. he seemed to enjoy it; he didn't try to jump out or cower under the furniture. so I picked him up, walked him across the shallow end, and held him under his belly while he swam back to my mom on the steps. we did seven laps of the pool. he could not get enough of it. he was wagging his tail the whole time, so happy to be in the cool water.

when we started packing up the convertible to head to the beach for my mom's birthday clamcake & chowder picnic, we decided to bring the dog. he had already had a big day, so why not? I wrapped him up in a big blanket and we hunkered down in the backseat out of the wind for the drive to the beach. he's usually a fidgety little guy in the car, but last night, no complaints. he just lay in my lap, content to be warm and with his humans. when we finally got our food and got to the beach, my mom suggested letting him off the leash and bringing him down to the water (lured by clamcakes....). he spent the next half hour alternating between sprinting across the soft sand from our blanket to the water's edge, splashing in the surf, and then sprinting back. he was in doggy heaven.

all this from a dog who HATES water and spends all his days basking lazily in the sunshine. I don't know if he's ever been so active in one day, nevermind so excited about playing in the water. very strange.

and look how tired he is today! right back to his old ways. though if I went from a lifetime of laziness to the most active day I've ever had, I'd be pretty tuckered out, too.

65 - tuesday

today is my mom's birthday, and my sister and I are determined to give her as stress-free a day as possible. we made her breakfast, we bought her flowers, and later tonight we're heading south to have a clamcake and chowder picnic on the beach. life is good.

my contribution is tackling the laundry room.

one load done, two in, four to go.

does wash-dry-folding seven loads of laundry count as a birthday present? I hope so. I hope saving the family home from the imminent dryer fire is also a pretty sweet gift.

nearly an inch thick slab of dryer lint. gross.

happy birthday, mama! we love you!
